Conjugation of कृ

Verb stems of the first conjugation seen so far are consistent throughout all forms (e.g. गच्छ becomes गच्छति, गच्छसि, अगच्छत्, etc.). In contrast the verbs of the second conjugation form variable stems. The root कृ ('do, make') belongs to Class 8, which is part of the second conjugation. The formation of stems from the roots of second conjugation classes will not be covered until Lesson 25 and 26, due to their diversity. However, the present and imperfect tense forms of the root कृ are worth memorizing early on due to their common usage.

The root कृ essentially forms five variants: करो, करव्, कुरु, कुर्व्, and कुर्.
  • करो is added to all singular suffixes, e.g. करोति, करोमि, अकरोत्
  • करव् is added to a singular suffix that begins with a vowel, e.g. अकरवम्
  • कुरु is added to second person plural suffixes, e.g. कुरुथ, अकुरुत
  • कुर्व् is added to all plural suffixes that begin with a vowel, e.g. कुर्वन्ति, अकुर्वन्
  • कुर् is added to first person plural suffixes, e.g. कुर्मः, अकुर्म
